In the ever-changing realm of music, it has become nearly impossible for bands to consistently keep up with the times. Brand New, despite the constant transitioning of today’s music from one hype to the next, has managed to produce a few of the most influential albums of it’s time without restricting themselves to one genre.

Brand New’s debut album, Your Favorite Weapon (2001), is an embodiment of the pop-punk era and truly exemplifies a time of care-free adolescence. Looking back now, we can see the naiveté in singer, Jesse Lacey’s lyrics that we definitely couldn’t find in the band’s later works. “I’m gonna stay 18 forever/So we could stay like this forever.”
The Long Island natives’ sophomore release, Deja Endentu (2003), brought about a stir in the scene and quite possibly could be considered one of the most influential albums of the emo crazed time period. This album was the band’s first step into the general public’s eye and demonstrated a very significant change in Lacey’s outlook.
The band’s most critically acclaimed (and my favorite) album, The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me, is a monumental display of the maturation the band underwent. Not to mention it has an eerie ability to both depress and mystify you within the span of a four minute song.
That leaves us with Brand New’s latest release, Daisy (2009). When I first heard the New York quartet was releasing a new album I thought, “How will they ever live up to this, sort of, dynasty that they’ve created with TDAGARIM?” When I first listened to the album, I was teetering back and forth between absolute awe and absolute disappointment.
Daisy’s 90’s, post-grunge feel is very different from any of the other albums this band has released thus far. Lacey and his cohorts took the masterpiece that they created with TDAGARIM and stripped it down to the bone, leaving us with nothing but a raw, teeth grinding whiplash.
Credit may be due to the recent change in song writing. It has been disclosed that Lacey, former Brand New song writer, gave all artistic freedom to guitarist, Vince Accardi. This may be the underlying reason for the sudden shift in style. Who knows?
Regardless of who wrote this album, the boys of Brand New still have yet to disappoint me. I suggest that everyone pick up a copy and listen with open ears.
